FIT India Recommendations

The Forum for Injection Technique (FIT) was developed to establish and promote best practice in injection technique for all involved in diabetes care.

Following this, a need for India specific guideline of Insulin injection technique was felt and the first draft of the FIT India guideline was prepared by a core writing group of three endocrinologists. A psychiatrist was co-opted into the core writing group to provide expert opinion on the psychological aspects of injectable therapy.

The methodology of literature search, medical writing strategy, and evidence grading were finalized after consensus approval and validation by a board of 13 health-care professionals from various medical disciplines, including endocrinologists, diabetologists, diabetes educators, psychiatrists, and psychologists. Simultaneously the draft was also reviewed by 75 clinicians from India and six clinicians from the Indian subcontinent (South Asian referral group).

These guidelines have been developed based on the evidence collated from published literature specific to the subject of injection technique. The grading method followed by Frid et al. (2010), which includes an ABC scale for the strength of recommendation and 123 scales for scientific support, has been used to grade the evidences.16 (see Fig. 1)Certain recommendations which are supported by manufacturer advice or by drug authority guidance have been ranked 1 in scientific support.

FIT is an autonomous organization whose overarching mission is to support people with diabetes using injectable therapies to achieve the best possible health outcomes that can be influenced by correct injection technique.
The development of FIT and the subsequent India recommendations for injection technique have been sponsored by BD Medical - Diabetes Care.
